HISTORY
The city of Harbor Beach actually began as a small settlement
south of the city at Rock Falls. The earliest settlers to this
area arrived in 1837 and established a sawmill for processing
lumber. The settlement eventually was named Barnettsville and became
a thriving community, with its own United States post office. In 1855, as
the settlement continued to grow, the town was renamed Sand Beach,
and served as the county seat until 1864. The village continued to
expand and shift northwards. In 1873, construction began on the
Harbor of Refuge. In 1899 the village of Sand Beach changed its name
to Harbor Beach and in 1910 was officially incorporated into a
city.
